Moss Isn't Just Sitting There
Under our trees and our rain, moss doesn’t stay on top of the shingles. It gets underneath them.
It lifts the shingles
Moss creeps under the bottom edge of a shingle and pushes it up as it grows. Once that edge is lifted, wind gets under it and rain gets past it.
It holds water on the roof
A moss mat works like a sponge lying on your shingles. It keeps them damp between rains, right through the months when they never get a chance to dry.
It takes years off the roof
Granules wash away, the mat spreads across the north slope, and a roof that should have had years left starts leaking at the valleys and the edges.

Pressure strips the granules
A pressure washer takes the granules off your shingles along with the moss, and those granules are the shingle’s protection from the sun. Manufacturers call for low pressure, and blasting a roof can void the warranty on it.
Soft washing kills it at the root
A low-pressure treatment kills the moss and algae where they’re attached, instead of scraping the top off and leaving the roots to grow back by spring.
Then we treat it to stay clear
We finish with a prevention treatment so the next wet season doesn’t undo the work, and we clear the gutters of everything that came off the roof.
